“Working” Is Not A Disability
Be Mindful About Where You Park
I often see people parked in a handicapped space who run into a store to quickly pick something up. I know that some disabilities are invisible and just because someone is running doesn’t mean they don’t actually have a disability. But the license plate or parking placard that makes it legal for them to park in these reserved spaces is not always on display. This gives them away as someone who thinks it won’t matter if they take that space for a few minutes. In most cases, it will not matter that much. I had one of the most interesting interactions with one such person last night.
I parked in a spot adjacent to a reserved handicapped space at a restaurant because all of the reserved spaces were taken.
When I left the restaurant, a car was parked behind my car and the one next to mine blocking a way out of the spaces. It was dark, raining and cold. I wanted to get in my car quickly and go home. There were two empty parking spots next to my car.
The driver of the vehicle came out of the restaurant carrying a few bags of food. I limped around my car in between it and the one that was blocking me in. He said he was sorry for parking there. I pointed out to him that he was blocking two handicapped spaces and there were another two available right next to them where he could have parked. He said, “Oh, well I’m working right now.” I didn’t have the strength to say, “What the actual fuck are you saying to me?” It was clear he had the perfect excuse for being inconsiderate. He was in a hurry which entitled him to interfere with one of the few perks of being handicapped.
