What is Sitting Across the Table From You?
First dates can be exciting and interesting. They can also go in all manner of different ways such as boring, awkward, uncomfortable, embarrassing, tedious, shocking and surprising. I suppose there is always some element of surprise since we usually have limited information about a person going in whether we found them online or met IRL. We usually know some minimum definitive description of the person such as what they do for a living, whether they are a parent or not, where they live, etc. Those are just details. We are all the same underneath it all.
No matter what stage of life we are in, or without regard to our other “details”, all of us had parents, childhoods, memories, highs, lows, disappointments, successes, losses, gains, pain, happiness, illness, friends, loneliness, fears, challenges, trouble, ease, wealth, poverty, health, injury, and the entire spectrum of human experience. Is this what we call “baggage”? I think so.
So, whomever you find yourself sitting across a table from in a coffee shop, bar or restaurant on a date, know they have a full set of luggage that you can help unpack. It might be fun. Live the adventure.
