We Signed Up For All Of This
We are volunteers
We think life “happens” to us. In many ways, it does. We certainly can’t control everything in life. On another level, we lose sight of how much we are continually signing up for so much of it.
I’m having an elective tummy tuck surgery tomorrow. My brother asked if I was nervous. “Of course I’m a little nervous,” I said, “but I signed up for this”. His response was interesting. He said, “We have all signed up for everything that is happening to us”. This can be hard to fully grasp. We think, “I didn’t sign up for this” when major life difficulties come along. Life will deal disasters, big and small, to all of us. Each of those experiences teach us what we need to fully develop into our complete selves.
If we believe in destiny and fate, then everything that happens to us happens for a reason:

There were some spiritual advisers in my life who theorized that a major life lesson I needed to learn was how to ask for help. This was posited as a theory for the reason I had a stroke when I was 35 years old. Might sound crazy, but I have asked for help with something or other every day since it happened. Lesson learned.
We often catch ourselves complaining about our jobs or our kids. We can’t control every aspect of how these things go, but we must remember we are volunteers in these endeavors and accept the lessons and growth that these challenges may present to us.
