This Is What Happened When I Forgot to Wipe My Old Cell Phone Before I Recycled It
I learned the hard way. It was simply embarrassing, but nothing really terrible became of it.
I had put my old cell phone into a donation box in our local post office. It’s a very small town post office that sees mostly neighborhood traffic.
My oldest son was in 8th grade at the time. He called me one night on my new phone and said “Mom, you’re an idiot. You’re supposed to clean your cell phone before you throw it away.” I had already forgotten what was on the old phone.
His 13 year old classmate had picked the phone out of the recycling box and somehow figured out it had belonged to his friend’s mom. There were some topless photos of me on the camera roll that I had sent to my husband. The kid told my son he had seen my photos. I was imagining the pictures being circulated through the entire school.
I was lucky that the boy’s mother was a friend of mine. She caught wind of what happened and called me. She assured me that her son told her what he had seen but that she had not seen them. She also commented that she was impressed that I had time to send topless photos to my husband when I explained the origin of the photos. Little did she know that my husband had deleted the pictures as soon as he received them via text. He was never as sex positive as I am. She told me that she had the phone, and I could pick it up at her house. I thanked her profusely for helping to limit the distribution of my photos when I picked up the phone later that day with tremendous relief.
This is a simple, embarrassing story about what could happen if we don’t “wipe” our phones clean when we dispose of them.
