There is certainly no rational way to deal with an alcoholic’s chaotic and hurtful behavior. Yet, we often try to give them some benefit of doubt that they will do better or don’t mean to be so mean. I also believe the “high functioning” alcoholic or addict is a myth. It is only an appearance they give of being ok and a term that makes it sound so when in fact they are not much different than an addict lying in a gutter in terms of their addiction.
