The Lady With the Purple and Blue Hair
“I have come to rely on the kindness of strangers” Scarlet O’Hara from “Gone With the Wind.”
I was approaching two swinging doors that are usually a challenge for me to open because I carry a cane in my functional right hand. Strangers will often anticipate this challenge and walk ahead of me to hold the door.
As I approached the set of doors, a woman breezed by and held the door as I slowly walked through. I said, “Thank you”. She said “Wait a minute, sister, and I’ll get the next one for you.”.
She held the next door for me as I walked into the cafe. I commented on how cool her hair looked because it had one blue and one purple streak down the back of her mostly silvery long, straight hair. “It’s only one hour old, and you have all that blue on today” she said.
The lady with the purple and blue streaks in her hair was the first in twenty years of needing help to call me “sister”. She smiled at me as she walked through the cafe to pick up food to go.
I got a feeling from her of a wonderful sense of all of us being in this together. That was why she called me sister, and I truly felt like we were sisters in that moment.
