The Ceremony For The Last Peach

The end of one of summer’s true delights

Peach season here in New Jersey runs from mid-July through early September. Knowing they would not be locally harvested much longer I grabbed a bunch last time I was at the grocery store. I let them continue to ripen on the kitchen counter for about a week.

We sat at the breakfast table on the second Sunday in September. When we realized that peach on the counter would be our last until next July or so, we ceremoniously sliced it in half, removed the pit, and slowly savored every juicy, fuzzy bite. With intention we did not mangle it by taking random, aggressive bites.
