Statesboro Blues and The Price Is Right
It was hard to divide my attention. During the 30 or so minutes it took to dye my hair in the hair salon, I sat there questioning if this was a good use of my valuable time. The radio was on, as was the television. The hairstylists were chatty with each other and their clients. My stylist in particular has a very loud conversation voice.
While I was trying to sit still and take all of this in, I started to question the necessity of not having gray hair which necessitates these visits to the hair salon every 6 weeks or so. The radio was playing “Statesboro Blues” by the Allman Brothers. I like this song. The television had “The Price Is Right.” I think this show is fun. With both of them playing at the same time, I couldn’t enjoy either one.
I have been considering letting my hair go to whatever color it wants to be at this stage of my life. I think it will be all gray if I let it go. My mother thinks it’s a bad idea because she thinks it will age me. My boyfriend thinks it will look great and make me look my age because he thinks I look about 10–15 years younger than my actual age of 55.
Sitting in the salon listening to Statesboro Blues and The Price Is Right over the chatter of voices made me decide to skip the next few hair coloring appointments and maybe use the time to read or write something instead. It will take a good while to grow out the color I just had done before I will know what color my hair actually is. Whatever it is, it is the easiest thing to correct if I find I really don’t like it. I am going to take the chance.
