My photo

I lie naked on the reclining lounge on the dock looking up at the clouds that are shape shifting from puppies to babies to gnomes and mermaids. The sun beats down in between the clouds. I am totally in the moment and relaxed.

A hawk drifts into view on the wind. It coasts effortlessly on the updraft. I watch for a few minutes then another hawk joins in the dance. I wonder if they have a goal other than to enjoy the breeze.

I watched the two hawks circle each other in peace with more than enough room for everyone. Then, I started to expect a conflict between them. I waited for one to attack the other for no reason. They didn’t seem to be competing for food or airspace.

They never did get in each other’s way, but instead drifted in the sky in peace. I wondered, why the hell did my mind even go there?

I think it was what I have come to expect from a violent and unpredictable world. Over the last weekend, at least 31 people were killed in mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.

We are left to wonder, why? I sat and watched the hawks share the sky and asked the age old, unanswerable question, why can’t we all just get along?

I’d recently read this story about Toni Morrison’s wise words about what artists can…
