I started the day with a decision to focus on the positive. While I waited for some writing inspiration, I made a choice to bring some beauty to the fore and I wrote this:
This seemed to set the tone for my day. I drove the usual route to the barn for my riding lesson, and came upon a big sign that read “ROAD CLOSED” at an intersection which led to a shorter route than the one I had traveled for many years. There was no direction given as to where to go for a detour, only the signs that were blocking the road. My initial reaction was annoyance. The only way I knew to get around this blockade was much longer. I wasn’t sure if I would make it in time for my lesson. Instead of dwelling on the inconvenience and stress, I focused on the beauty of the alternate route.
I had driven down this road for years before I learned of a short cut. I had forgotten how beautiful it was, especially in early spring. It is several miles of stately horse farms with names like “Rocking Horse Farm” and “Tall Oaks”. The trees were bursting with buds which promised full leaves in a few more weeks. Strong yellow daffodils were pushing up through spring green carpets of grass. Bright yellow forsythia were billowing with blooms. Pink magnolias punched into the gray sky above. There were ponies and horses grazing in green pasture after pasture. One farm had fuzzy sheep and lambs for sale that were relaxing in the pasture. I saw bright white 18th century churches ready for the coming Easter holiday. I arrived at the barn with 30 minutes to spare.
Unlike last week’s lesson, my instructor gave me the option of riding indoors or outside because it was a little cold. I chose the outdoors. The barn felt like a freezer last week so I figured if I was going to be cold, I may as well enjoy the beauty of the surroundings from high on the horse’s back.
Some say what we put out into the Universe is returned to us. I was grateful to see this principle in action today. The mindset I chose to start the day with carried forward to make a potentially stressful roadblock turn into a beautiful ride.
Thank you for reading :)
