Mom’s Boyfriends

A Poem

It was always Dad

Our whole lives

He moved away

Leaving Mom

Crippled and Alone

She was careful

About whom she brought around

And

There was the handsome executive

who drank too much

The photographer across the river

The genius PhD candidate who made
Mexican food

The literary PhD across the other river

The kind widower who picked her up for dates

The nice older man who came to watch a movie

It’s just been weird

All those dates

And still

She is crippled and alone
