How I Used Rock and Roll to Heal From Divorce
My month of non-linear healing as a rock star
As I entered the 84th month of my separation from my husband, things were becoming more contentious and I was looking for ways to distract myself from thinking about the fact he was moving his girlfriend into what had been our lake house.
So, I decided to become a rock star.
I’d seen residents of the retirement community where I landed earlier this year sing with the Music Club’s band, Never Too Old, at one of the meetings after I joined the club.
Discussions with the bass player in the pool led me to admit to being able to sing and play tambourine. Even though I had never sang into a microphone in front of an audience, I decided I could do it.
At practice we worked on singing Angel From Montgomery by John Prine and Dead Flowers by the Rolling Stones. The band was kind enough to move rehearsal up to the garage from the basement because of my disability for my first practice.
Now, at 59 years old, I belonged to a garage band.
