Future Lovers

And tiny tattoos

My massage therapist closely examined my new 1/4 inch high tattoos of a quarter note on the front and back of my shoulder which I needed as permanent marks to indicate the precise placement of a medical device I use to treat chronic shoulder pain. The tattoos are pink, and look like they could be natural skin markings.

She said she imagined “future lovers” noticing them over time. I said, “Future lovers? Are there going to be future lovers?”

“I hope so. Do you really think Rex will be your last lover?”

“I don’t know, I thought Dirk (my estranged husband) was going to be my only lover, but I’ve had a few since we broke up, so you never know. Never say never.”

Fantasies flooded in. Our future lovers don’t have faces or names yet.

Thank you for reading:)
