Congratulations On Your Face
First, I must credit @The Angry Therapist for pointing out that when someone tells you you are beautiful, they are basically saying “congratulations on your face”. He was delineating the difference between what makes us beautiful on the outside vs. inside.
Having a beautiful face just means you hit the genetic jackpot. Maybe you take great care of your skin or are expert at applying makeup, but beyond any effort you make to look good, having nice features is a matter of chance.
It feels good to be complimented on our looks, but I often feel it’s a bit of a hollow compliment because it is the things I make an effort to be good at that actually matter to me. Tell me I am kind or that I made you laugh, and I will feel great about that. Tell me I am beautiful, and I want to give credit to my parents.
