When Home Sharing with an Estranged Spouse Gets Weird

It was Sunday night when he texted “What is the sheet situation?” I knew what he was asking, but, just because like to make people’s minds go interesting places I said,

“What do you mean?”

“Do I need to change them?”

“Depends.”

“On what?”

“Depends how clean you like your sheets.”

On alternate weekends my husband and I switch houses since we separated four years ago and he moved into our vacation home. He usually keeps the nicest set of sheets on the bed for his use and puts “the boyfriend sheets” on the bed when it is my weekend.

An unexpected change in the alternating schedule arose last Friday. When I arrived at the cabin with my boyfriend the nice sheets were on the bed. Rather than re make the bed with the other set, we decided we would just take the opportunity to “fuck on his sheets,” as Rex so delicately put it.

We had a busy weekend in bed. We washed the fancy sheets on Sunday and put them back on the bed before we left. As we did so I realized this would confuse my husband since he wouldn’t expect to find the same set of sheets on the bed when he returned home. I knew he would wonder if they were clean.

I suppose it would have been polite to let my husband know that the sheets had been washed, but it was more fun and interesting to let him wonder.
