You can’t be someone other than you. No amount of manipulation will change who or what you are. This is the biggest reason to put your uniqueness into what you produce. If we are writing, we need to be our authentic selves.
I struggle with this on occasion when I consider what I’m publishing online for anyone to see. I guess the concern is around being judged for being myself or living my life the way I want. Yet, do readers only care about the bright, shiny parts of life? On the contrary, I think we are most interested in other’s genuine struggles to stay afloat, their honest mistakes, honest failures after a good fight to succeed, and victories in the face of challenges. Even if my stories could be judged in someone’s negative light, they will always be written in my own consistent, authentic voice. What I think, explore, and discover are things that can only be mine.
I believe I have an important, useful perspective on living a full, happy life in the face of adversity. I am in the process of developing a personal website and social media presence for my personal brand in hopes of spreading my message.
It occurred to me as I posted yesterday’s story about finding a fuck buddy after my lover left town that as much as I think it might sound a bit not so pretty to someonewho might judge, that there isn’t a newspaper around that would print that story:
We Can Only Be Friends In An Emergency
When my long term lover moved away to Indiana from New Jersey I wondered what I would do to replace his physical touch…
I will stay consistent and authentic in my own true voice. Be true. Be you.
