I wasn’t sure if I was helping

“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”- Martin Luther King, Jr.

I won’t know if or how I helped anyone today. But, I tried. I did something small.

I volunteered to play games with residents of a nursing home/rehab facility for three hours with a group from my college alumni association.

Some volunteers worked on tying fleece blankets together for the residents. It was quite cold in the basement room where we met so they were handy when the residents came down for the session. I opted out because of my lack of fine motor skills.

I was able to play bingo with several residents. The people sitting on either side of me both needed occasional assistance with placing their chips on their boards because of motor control issues. I greeted each resident who came to our table with a smile. Maybe I brightened their day. I don’t have any way to tell.

Today is not simply a day off from school or work.

It is intended to be a day of service to others. Do something small in a great way.
